Telangana elections 2023

Image
(Fig - source ) November has transformed into a battleground for democracy in India with five states (MP, Rajasthan, Chattisgarh, Telangana & Mizoram) going to the polls. It is a matter of great debate among political pundits whether the outcomes of these state elections will serve as a prelude to the grand stage of 2024. While I'm no expert to comment on this debate, what drew my attention is how these elections are being fought, particularly in my home state, Telangana. As a political science student, I am aware of the important role identity factors like caste, religion, language, etc. play in Indian politics. Renowed political scientist Christophe Jaffrelot once famously said, "Indians do not cast their vote, rather vote their caste" . Which identity factors are important varies from region to region. In general, religion plays much less role in South Indian politics compared to North India even as issues like language and caste are highly prominent. This pre-em...

Khaki Files

Image
Before getting into the contents of the book, first, why did I pick this book?  I wanted to have a close understanding of the job nature of an IPS officer before joining the National Police Academy (NPA). Although I've closely interacted with quite a few officers and watched many 'Dabangg' style movies (:p) I didn't fully know what it meant to be an IPS officer. What do they do in their day-to-day lives, how do they solve crimes, handle law and order, and how exciting/unexciting is the job?  So, when I was searching for books on this subject I came across Khaki files, written by an officer who had a fulfilling career as an IPS. The author, Neeraj Kumar, is a retired IPS officer who served in many distinguished positions including in the CBI and as the Commissioner of Delhi Police. The book is divided into nine chapters, each of which is dedicated to a particular case the officer was directly/indirectly involved in handling. Coincidentally, almost all the cases mentioned...

Thoughts on RRR (2022)

Image
Load (with an emotional story, gripping background score & riveting action sequences) + Aim (at global audience) + Shoot = Epic blockbuster! RRR, from being a pan-Indian phenomenon, has become a worldwide phenomenon. It is no exaggeration to say that RRR has garnered more fans from foreign countries like USA/Japan than India. An Irish Times article called RRR an 'unstoppable cultural phenomenon'. As of now, RRR is the most expensive Indian film ever made with a budget of over Rs. 500cr and is the third highest-grossing Indian film with collections of over Rs. 1200cr worldwide. When I first went to watch the film on the big screen some nine months ago, I didn't know what to expect, but I know for sure that some spectacle was going to unleash before me, reason - my unflinching belief in Rajamouli! Right after the titles started, I realized, not just a spectacle but something more was in store for me! After those three hours, I was speechless. The movie was fully worth ...

Parasite (2019): review

Image
Firstly, why did I choose to watch this film? One obvious reason was the film's sweeping victory in the 2020 Academy awards winning awards for best picture, best director, best screenplay, and best international feature film! This should be a sufficient reason to make it a must-watch! But, the other compelling reason is the increasing popularity of K-drama & K-pop these days across the world, particularly in India. So I was curious to know what's attracting the global audience so much to Korean films. Now, coming to the film Parasite, it was directed by Bong Joon Ho, who also directed many high-grossing Korean films including The Host & Barking dogs never bite. While watching the film Parasite, I couldn't resist from acknowledging every few minutes the sheer brilliance of Bong Joon Ho in making me feel more than one powerful emotion simultaneously - humor, sorrow, and anxiousness. When I read the Wikipedia page of Bong Joon Ho, I realized this is precisely what he i...
